Private Tutorials

Some classes are better suited for the student and teacher agreeing to meet at a designated time and place during the event. Fees for these tutorials go directly to the teacher on the day of the tutorial. The student must be registered with Ozark Fiber Fling. Please list on the form if you want a tutorial class.

Alter Ego Dye Class · Nancy Meyers

In this class students will dye a scarf using two different colors of dye in one jar. The instructor will explain the differences in certain fiber taking a certain dye and how that can be used on these scarves. There will be time for questions and answers regarding dyeing in general. Students will take home a completed scarf.

Have you always wanted to try your hand at weaving, but had no idea where to start? Here is the place. We will go over a RH loom, naming the parts and pieces. Weaving terminology will be discussed. You will learn the easy, quick warping using a peg, and then weave. Basic weave on the RH is plain weave, but it will not look ‘plain’ when you are done. Much can be done with color, texture and how you put them together. Come join the fun! Everything needed for this class is provided.

Learn the basics of embroidery with this kit-based class and explore the interaction between needle, thread, and fabric. Join experienced embroiderer Kelli to practice Buttonhole Stitch, Cross Stitch, Fly Stitch, Feather Stitch, Satin Stitch, Chain Stitch, Fern Stitch, Lazy Daisy Stitch, Back stitch, and Running Stitch. Class includes kit with pre-printed fabric, stitch guide, needle, and hoop.  Bring: scissors, a pencil or pen.

Students will learn long tail cast on, basic knitting and purl stitches, casting off and tips about yarns, twist, and the general mechanics of knitting along with a bit of history.  A great class for those who have never knitted or those who want to refresh their skills. Beginning Lace Knitting · Kelli Slack

In this class students will move beyond the very basics of knitting and explore beginning lace knitting. We will discuss the different lace knitting traditions and what makes them distinct. At the end of this class students should be able to identify lace knitting, read a chart, and create paired and unpaired increases and decreases. We will cover the basic techniques and information you need to successfully knit lace shawls – how to read stitch charts; what fibers are best suited for lace patterns; how to evaluate the appropriate needle size for the fiber selected, and then measure the gauge; how simple decreases and YO’s form the lace patterns; and how to block the finished garment,

Skills: Students should have a good grasp of basic knitting skills such as the knit stitch, purl stitch, casting on, binding off, what a yarn over is, knit 2 togethers, and slip, slip, knits.

Bring: 1 skein of sock/fingering weight wool yarn to use for practice swatches in class. Circular or Straight knitting needles in US sizes 3 through 7. Highlighter tape (recommended) available from A Twisted Picot in the vending area. Stitch markers, Tapestry Needle, Small Crochet Hook, Scissors.

Beginning Shuttle Tatting · Debra Kohloff

Tatting is a technique for handcrafting a particularly durable lace created from a pattern of a series of rings and chains.

This class will teach the basics of reading a pattern and how to make the Rings, Chains and Picots. The students will receive a tatting shuttle, thread and instructions for making a bookmark. We will practice the basic stitches in class and start working on the bookmark.

All supplies provided by the instructor.

Cherokee Twining, Twining in the Round · Priscilla Rhodebeck

Cherokee twining is an ancient form of twining. You will learn the basics of twining in the round with a simple loom. The class will include the loom. Please bring a strong non stretch yarn for the warp. To save time, this should be cut into approximately 100 pieces, 30 inches long. The warp can be 2 or 3 different colors for the body.

Crocheted Corner Bookmark · Deborah Cambron

Requirements:  Basic crochet knowledge.  Stitches used in this project include chain, single-double-treble crochets and half double crochet.  Pattern is worked with crochet thread using a steel hook.

This bookmark has lots of visual appeal and makes a great gift.  The pattern is completely symmetrical allowing for ease of crochet and shaping.  It is worked in the round.

Using thread and micros hooks to create crochet lace edging. Students will learn to make a lace edging.  Students need to bring crochet thread in a light color, a 2 mm to 3.5 mm steel hook depending on comfort level and desired size.

Don’t have room for a floor wheel? Maybe your health is holding you back from using your treadle wheel. Come explore the use of an electric wheel. It is small, portable and can sit in your lap or table. We will be using the Nano 1:1 and the EEL 6. If you have an electric wheel, bring it. If you do not have an electric wheel, you can rent one from me for $15. Students should bring a notebook, pen and a good attitude. Please notify in your registration if you need to rent a wheel

Enhance your Spin from Basic to Beyond · Susan McFarland

You have the spinning of S’s and Z’s down. Now you need to learn about your tensions, fiber prep spinning with the bend, spinning long and short draw and spinning other fibers. This class is past beginner’s stage and into intermediate spinners. Students should bring a working spinning wheel, orifice hook, several bobbins, ball winder or niddy-noddy. Materials will be provided. Spinning wheel will be available for a rental fee ($20). Fee will be waved towards purchasing of wheel at my booth.

Fusion Color Dyeing · DeAnna Amos

Using two colors of acid dyes, we will delve into beginning, user friendly dyeing.  Students will dye a cake of yarn and two ounces of roving to achieve a three-color projects.  Please bring a PVC noddy noddy, and a ball winder if you have one.  Wear an apron or clothes that you don’t mind dyeing, as well as gloves.  This class is great for beginners and those who want to expand their techniques. How to create a granny square and what you can use them for (bags, pants, sweaters ect. not just blankets). Students will need a 5.5mm hook and weight 4 yarn (I am not picky on fiber type, just weight 4). They can be any skill level, but a base understanding of hand positioning and tension is preferred.

Somebody gave you an inkle loom or you found one at a flea market or at a yard sale and there were no directions for it whatsoever! Or you have directions but they make no sense whatsoever. You figured out your inkle loom and you’ve got the basic weave down pat. Let’s do some pickup techniques to learn how to make simple patterns and the basics of letters and numbers. We will also touch bases on making built-in fringe and adding beads. Bring your inkle loom, cotton crochet thread, scissors, beads if you have them, a notebook and pencil, and any directions that may have come with your loom and we will see what these looms can do!

Needle Felted Bobbin Birds · Jenny Johnson

Let’s needle felt a songbird together! Students will learn how to felt a common Missouri songbird that will perch on a decorative wooden bobbin. Choices include a cardinal, chickadee, bluebird, and robin. We will start by felting the same base bird body and wings and add finishing details according to what bird you would like to make. The class structure has been updated to be even more user-friendly and it is suitable for adventurous beginners and up. Beginner and intermediate needle felting techniques will be taught. Please be aware that needle felting involves focus and dexterity, as the needles are small and quite sharp! The finished bird measures about 3 inches tall. You will take home the finished bird with its bobbin. All materials provided.

Needle Felted Tapestry · Jenny Johnson

Felting a tapestry is a fun and easy way to get into needle felting, or to just make something beautiful to hang on the wall! Students will get a pre-felt background with a drawn design on top. Design options will feature motifs inspired by nature and folk art. Similar to a color-by-number painting, this involves filling in blank spaces with different colored wool. Beginner-friendly, this class teaches beginner needle felting skills. Please be aware that needle felting involves focus and dexterity, as the needles are small and quite sharp! Don’t be fooled by the simplicity of the project; the felting will take the entire time. The finished tapestry will measure about 6×10 inches. You will take home the finished tapestry and items for hanging.  All materials provided.

Do you want a project that is small, easy, varies with other fiber/ fabric, and can use recycled items? Consider working a peg loom. In this class you will learn how to it set up, explore the use of different fibers/fabrics. weave different designs and bind off. We will go over tips and cautions not seen in online how To’s or DIY post. Students will work on sample projects. This is a great beginner class.

Students should bring to class pen, paper for notes, scissors, if you have old tee shirts, scrap fabric and yarns, plastic trash bags, bring them.

The teacher will provide looms and materials. Looms can be purchased after the class.

This basket starts with a wooden base, with a decorative hole in the top, spokes are inserted evenly before the weaving begins. The basket 6” tall with a circumference of 25” making it the perfect size for a square box of tissues to hide underneath! The name may say tissue topper, but it’s great for hiding a ball of yarn also.

Tunisian crochet looks like knit, but it’s really crochet. But it has a lot in common with crochet, and it uses a long hook that looks somewhat like a knitting needle. Come learn the basic stitches with us in the form of a simple scarf. Bring any Tunisian or afghan hooks you have, scissors, a tapestry needle, pencil and notebook and a skein of solid, light colored worsted yarn.

Learn basic mending skills in this class, including: duplicate stitch patches, woven patches, sewn patches, and visible mending with tatting. Techniques taught include duplicate stitch, woven patches, sewn patches, and visible mending. Class includes handouts.

Skills: Some basic skill with a sewing needle is required. Students should either know basic knitting or have a friend to supply them with 2 knitted squares for class. For those who know tatting, there is an additional way to mend with tatting. 

Supplies: Clothing with holes to be repaired OR 2 knit swatches (6 inches square minimum) and 2 fabric squares to be cut and repaired (6 inches square minimum), sashiko or long sewing needles, tapestry needle, at least 3 colors of embroidery/ sashiko thread, scissors, fingering weight yarn leftovers (or yarn size to match the squares), optional for the tatters are 2 to 4 tatting shuttles and size US 10 or 20 thread, US 10 or 12 crochet hook.
